Quick survey about baby names and writing?

I know there are quite a few baby name answerers that also write stories in their off time. These questions are mostly meant for you guys.

1. Would you ever name your child a name that you used for a character, first or middle name?

2. Are the kind of names you use for characters different than your favourites for actual children [more popular, more unusual, etc.]?

3. Your favourite name for a boy or a girl?

4. Your favourite male and female character name you've ever used.

Thanks!Quick survey about baby names and writing?
Mm, I've noticed the correllation too. A lot of the namers are writers in their spare time. It's more of a passion/future career than a hobby for me, though :)

1.

If I liked the name. I use a lot of names I love for characters, because they're kind of like children for me in that I've created them, "raised" them, made them what they are.. I see my fiction as being completely separate from real life, so a character having a certain name wouldn't stop me from using it on a child.

2.

Nope, they're generally favourites of mine. Unless there is some background behind a characters name. For example, I have a female character with a male name because her parents wanted and planned for a boy before she was born, but I'd probably never use a male name for a girl. And in a story I wrote a year-or-so ago, one of the families had really obscure/trendy names (one was named Grape!) because they were "famous", on a reality show about multiples.

1. Highly unlikely, it'd be really weird for me. I just don't give my characters names that I would want for my kids.

2. Yeah (see above). I like to avoid unusual names all together, the general public doesn't usually like unusual names. Popular names are simple and easy. But I usually just name them whatever I feel is right.

3. I really don't know - it changes all the time. I like Daniel and Justin a lot. For girls, I used to be in love with the name Athena (the one exception to my "no unusual names" rule) - I'm still holding on to it though, definently won't use it on a character. I also like Alice.

4. I tend to lean towards simple, older names for my characters or middle names or whatever. I honestly don't have any favorites, and I can't remember every name I've used. I named a girl "Olivia Green" once (I actually really like the name Olivia and just might end up naming my daughter that). I named a family member of this Olivia girl Bridget Green. Um, other than that I don't really knowQuick survey about baby names and writing?
1. Probably not, I'd get tired of the name

2. Erm, they're about the same, yeah

3. Favourite Girls: Favourite Boys:

Norah Patrick

Amity Caleb

Eden Griffin

4. Favourite female character name was Carrie and I don't really have a favourite male.
1. No. The names that I like for babies will never be used for my story characters for that exact reason. I wouldn't want my child named after a fictional character in any sense because I think that's just a little odd... especially if the character is undesirable (whether it be in looks, personality etc). If I had the children first, I might consider using their middle name as a first for a character that I was particularly fond of... but I might ask the child first.

2. Yes. Usually the names I use in my stories are more adventurous than my personal style -- more unusual or unique, names that you'd find on my guilty pleasures list. On the flip side, there are also some characters with far more traditional names than is my general style.

3. Matilda Violet and Oliver William

4. Penelope Jocelyn "Ellie" and Nicholas James "Nick"

:) Great question! *star*
1 Possibly. I've used some pretty nice names in stories, before, like Lillian, Charlotte, Peter, Marilyn, Patrick. Well, I consider them nice, any way. Oh, and I've used Caitlin, Carson and Schuyler -- Caitlin was the narrator, Carson her father, Schuyler her brother -- which are now on my name list.

#2 Not particularly, but I ought to make them different, so the names don't get a chance to grow on me.

#3 Emilia, Carson.

#4 Carson and Caitlin, definitely.

Star for you!

=)
1 -- Possibly. It would have to be a name that I really loved to consider using it if I've used it for a character. Then again, many writers use the names of their children (or parts of their names) in their writing. I'd probably use it as a middle name though.

2 -- It varies depending on what I'm writing, and when the time period is. From what I've seen though I tend to go for quite traditional sounding names (occasionally I've gone for an unusual one) which fits in with my naming style as well.

3 -- For a boy I love the name Lucas and for a girl my current favourite is the name Susannah.

4 -- For a fantasy piece I wrote a while back I used the names Amity "Ami" and Nyx for two female characters once which I really loved at the time (and still do - though the latter is more of a GP name). I can't choose between those two cause I really like them. For a boy though I used the name Oscar and I just love it.

You're welcome,

Victoria
1. No. That would be too weird.

2. I tend to use more unusual names, or make up names. Sometimes I use a common name if it suits the character. I also use a lot of very old fashioned/medieval names, or European names.

3. William and Mara. For characters I don't have any favourite names.

4. Chrisobal and Estrella (not the same story).
