I am from Australia, and I assume that many of the people on here are American (or not from Australia because the time here is 2am lol)
But I have always found that people say that they think names, that I thought were rather common, were unusual, or the other way around. And it made me think how different our tastes may be, even though we are from English speaking countries.
Have you noticed trends or differences in baby names in some countries that you do not have in your own?What differences have you noticed in baby names across different English speaking countries?
I think it's really interesting to hear what is popular in other countries. My friend from England likes to compare baby names with me and their "top 20" list is actually quite different from ours with some cross-overs.
I once mentioned how there are a lot of boys names being used for girls, and my friend seems to reply a lot with, "Oh, we don't use that for either gender, it's a surname only." Makes me wonder how some naming traditions started - and how surnames became first names etc.
:)
Yes i know what you mean. I live in Melbourne, and Grace, Lily, Ruby, seem to be common at the moment.
I know when i first moved to Australia from England in 1981, girls of m\y own age (i was 20) were called Leanne, Cheryl, Deanne etc. I thought they were awful. In England girls of my age were Jacqueline, Carole, Susanah, Kim, Nicola, Sharon, Amanda, Patricia, Denise. Boys were, Paul, Simon, Jonathon, Gary, Mark, Nigel, Kevin, Graham, Stephen.What differences have you noticed in baby names across different English speaking countries?
BabyNameWizard.com actually has one of the best listings of international name statistics on the internet... go to any name in Namipedia on BNW and scroll down on the right side to see how popular it is around the world. For example, my favorite name Josephine - http://www.babynamewizard.com/namipedia/鈥?/a>
* #189 in Canada (British Columbia)
* #208 in United States
* #267 in Canada (Alberta)
* #404 in Norway
* #449 in Scotland
Sorry -- not ranked in Australia!What differences have you noticed in baby names across different English speaking countries?
I would assume that the popularity of names differs between countries. I don't know too much about Australian names except for a family with two boys that moved here when the boys were young. Their names were Angus and Duncan which I remember thinking was very unusual. What are the most common names you hear in Australia??
